Weekly Alluviance #13: Stop Chasing the Money
YOUR WEEKLY DOSE OF ALLUVIANCE!

Let's be honest, one of the main reasons why most people pursue a career in sales is to make money. And there's nothing inherently wrong with that - money is a powerful motivator and attracts the best and brightest to the field.

However, there comes a crucial moment in the career of a sales professional when they need to consciously decide to stop chasing money and the next shiny object that catches their attention.

For me, this realization dawned on me when I chose to leave the high paying and safe company of Microsoft for a small startup called Outreach. Outreach offered a smaller OTE, more risk, but obviously a greater upside if "we made it".

While to some it seemed counterintuitive, many of whom tried to convince me to stay the corporate life, I felt a calling.

And I'd do it again in a heart beat.

It brought me growth opportunities as a sales professional, as a leader, and helped me understand how a purpose-driven culture grows from a belief.

Had I optimized for the highest OTE, I would have missed out on so much more.

If you allow the dollar amount to dictate your path, you’re always going to be at the whim of the highest bidder. But if you accept that money can be one of many factors, you’ll open up a whole new world of possibilities.
