Weekly Alluviance #170: The right room changes you

Your weekly dose of Alluviance!

One of my favorite moments at every immersion happens before we’ve taught a single thing.

People are still arriving. Coffee is being sipped. Bags are getting dropped by the door.

You can feel it.

That quiet question in the room:

“Am I actually safe to be myself here?”

Most high-achievers know how to walk into a room and perform.

We know how to sound clear. How to be impressive. How to talk about the wins. How to make the hard thing sound handled.

Especially in sales and leadership.

You get really good at being “on.”

But there’s a moment at every immersion where the armor starts to come off.

Someone tells a truth.

Not the polished version.

The real one.

“I’m exhausted.” “I don’t know if I actually want what I’ve been chasing.” “I’m good at this, but I don’t feel like myself.”

And then you see the nods around the room.

That look of:

“Oh thank God. It’s not just me.”

That moment matters.

Because community is not just a nice-to-have in this work.

It’s one of the core pillars.

You can read the books. Listen to the podcasts. Take the courses. Do the journaling alone in your apartment.

All of that can help.

But there is something different that happens when you are in the right room with the right people.

People who are ambitious AND honest. People who want to win, but not at the cost of abandoning themselves. People who can laugh hard, go deep, call you forward, and sit in the fire w/ you.

That kind of room gives your nervous system evidence to unclench.

That’s why the people matter so much at Alluviance.

Because the room does something no framework can do.

It helps you remember who you are underneath the performance.

And once you’ve felt that, it gets a lot harder to keep walking into rooms where you have to leave half of yourself at the door.
