Weekly Alluviance #187: The belief behind the behavior

The life you keep saying you want is competing with a story you still believe.

This weekend, 30 of us gathered in Austin for our Alignment Immersion. We started with a question most people can answer pretty quickly:

Where does your life feel out of alignment?

Work. Relationships. Health. The way you treat yourself when nobody’s watching.

Then came the harder question.

What are you doing on an ordinary Tuesday that keeps it that way?

Maybe you want to be present at home, but you’re checking work through dinner. Maybe you want to speak honestly, but you keep saying what will make people like you.

There’s usually a belief underneath that makes the behavior feel necessary.

If I slow down, I’ll fall behind.
If I disappoint someone, they’ll leave.
If I’m not achieving, what am I worth?

I know that last one intimately. I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to prove I’m enough. I can make it look like ambition, even when I’m really asking the next win to settle something it never could.

So we named the stories.
Felt what they’d cost us.
Asked whether they were actually true.

One person told Chris afterward, “I thought I came for sales training but instead I rediscovered myself.”

That’s what can happen when you get in a room with people willing to be seen. Someone says the thing you thought was only yours, and something opens up. There was a lot of love and purpose in that room.

Now we’re home. The old stories will speak again.

The work is hearing them, and making the next choice from what we know is true.

P.S. To everyone who came to Austin and brought the real you: thank you. You made that room what it was. 🙏
