Weekly Alluviance #191: Asheville is giving me some reps

Your weekly dose of Alluviance!

I teach people how to meet change with presence.

Then I moved to Asheville.

(Turns out I’m still my own worst student 🙈)

The first 3-4 days were ROUGH.

No gym.
No community.
No place to work outside the house.
Not even a good spot to walk the dog off leash.

My nervous system wanted its usual fix, and it wasn’t here.

And I’m not going to lie, underneath all of it was fear.

We came here hoping to settle in. Buy a home. Raise our family. There’s a LOT of hope riding on this move. So when everything felt unfamiliar, the fear leaked into everything. Into my work. Into some challenging conversations w/ myself, and with my wife.

(She may or may not have told me to go make friends because I was driving her crazy. Fair.)

In our community, we talk a lot about moving from a conventional way of being to a conscious one.

Conventional runs on status, money, achievement, effort and control. You suppress what you feel and keep pushing.

Conscious looks more like:

Self-connection.
Curiosity.
Presence.

I could feel how fast I went conventional on this move. Find the gym. Find the people. Lock it all down by Friday.

So I’ve been coming back to the cushion.

When I sit, I imagine my thoughts moving down into my body, slow, like molasses. And they just... melt.

If I skip that, I carry those thoughts all day. Into calls. Into conversations w/ my wife. I’m physically here, but I’m not really HERE.

When I do it, I get to show up from some spaciousness instead.

Then I’ve been getting out of the house.

A sauna and cold plunge spot where I met someone.
A rooftop bar with new friends on Friday night.
LinkedIn fam introducing me to people who live here.

None of it is a full community yet. It doesn’t need to be in week two.

Change is hard no matter what you do. Even when you chose it.

But slowly, by connecting with myself first and then with the people around me, I'm starting to really enjoy it here.
