Weekly Alluviance #193: What’s your dream?

Weekly Alluviance #193: What’s your dream?

Your weekly dose of Alluviance!

I recently asked my friend’s 5-year-old what their dream was.

Their answer: a horseback rider. Like a cowboy.

So much passion in it. So much purity.

(Kid’s got taste. My wife and I have been learning to ride horses, and I still get a rush every time we go from a trot to a canter 🤠)

But something happens as we grow up.

More responsibility.
Kids.
A job that keeps getting in the way.
Taxes.

And somewhere in there, we lose the essence of our dreams.

So let me ask you:

When was the last time somebody genuinely asked you what your dream is?

And I don’t mean “where do you see yourself in five years?” The interview question doesn’t count.

That question is why I’m in Miami as I write this, leading a one-day onsite for the 40-person team I told you about last week. They restore vintage Ferraris, Porsches, and Lamborghinis. Cars people dream about their whole lives.

Their founder put it to me like this:

“Sure, we make our clients’ dreams come true. But how do we do the same thing for our people?”

So that’s the whole day.

Name your own dream.
Hear the dreams of the people you work next to every day.
Bring it to action.

Because the purpose of a dream isn’t only that you achieve it.

The purpose of a dream is who it causes you to become.

A dream works a lot like a star. Look at the one at the center of our solar system. Eight planets circling it, and not one of them is grinding to stay in orbit.

They’re being pulled.

Most of us go after our dreams w/ pure push. Grinding. Getting after it. (I know that mode REALLY well.)

The effort matters. You still have to do the work.

But can you feel the pull too? That “I don’t know why I want this, I just know I’m being called to it” feeling?

That’s the essence of a dream. And it can live anywhere. Your work, your relationships, your health, the money and the freedom it gives you.

So, two questions for you this week.

What’s your dream?

And when was the last time you asked someone close to you what theirs is?

Your partner.
Your kids.
The people you work with.
The people you work for, and the ones who work for you.

No agenda. Just curiosity.

P.S. Some fun news: Weekly Alluviance was just named one of the Top 50 Sales Newsletters! I started writing it the day after I got fired in September 2022. This is #193. Thank you for being here 🙏

"Where this newsletter started"

In September 2022 I was fired after 5 years at a company.
The next day at 9 am I went on a run and decided I was gonna prove to them why that was the worst decision they ever made.
