Weekly Alluviance #114: Own Your Weirdness

Your weekly dose of Alluviance!
Most people new to sales absolutely get this wrong. I sure did!
Success in sales isn't about fitting in. It's about owning your weirdness.
It’s not about the perfect script, the slickest suit, or the loudest TED Talk voice. For years, I thought it was. Back at Microsoft, I played the part: polished, aggressive, the guy who’d crush quotas and charm the room.
But. I was empty. I was hiding. I was overcompensating. And I was terrified of being exposed.
It took me a while to learn this, and I'm hoping I can help you speed up the process. Your edge isn’t in your sameness. It’s in your weirdness.
Building Alluviance didn’t come from me blending in. It came from me owning the stuff I used to hide. Getting curious, not knowing all the answers, being completely vulnerable, connecting deeper. That’s my fuel.
Here’s how I stopped apologizing for my weirdness and how you can too:
Name It
Stop pretending it’s not there. My thing? I pretended to be this polished, super experienced person. I even lied about my age. I felt so uncomfortable being me and wanting to belong. What’s yours? Call it out.
Flip It
Whatever your weirdness, it can be a strength in disguise. Too empathetic? You’re a trust-building machine. Too loud? You command attention. I turned my young age into a strength when I owned that I grew up immersed in technology and understood digital transformation deeply. Reframe yours.
Use It
Don’t just accept it. Leverage it. My mix of weirdness is at the heart of every Arise immersion we run. Your quirks aren’t baggage. They’re your toolkit. Put ‘em to work.
I’m not here to sell you some cookie cutter “be yourself” message. Life’s messier than that. This is about getting real with the parts of you that don’t fit the script and using that to your advantage.
Ready for your first exercise in being weird? Hit reply and tell me: what’s the one “weird” thing you’ve been hiding that could change your game? I’m listening.
Let’s own the edges that make us great!
P.S. Want the unfiltered story of how I went from corporate clone to building this? It’s on the latest episode of the 30 Minutes to President's Club pod. Check it here.
P.P.S. I saved the best part for last. I'm getting married this weekend to the woman of my dreams. I'm so grateful, excited and ready to have found someone who accepts me for all my weirdness!
1. Featured LinkedIn Post:
"The Secret to Stress"
My dad is turning 80 this year and has a 6-pack. He’s an anti-aging doctor so is kinda the walking proof of his own philosophy. Naturally, people ask him all the time:
“What’s your secret?”
2. Quote to fuel your Alluviance:
"Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma—which is living with the results of other people’s thinking." – Steve Jobs
