Weekly Alluviance #157: Why Your Company Doesn't Teach the Inner Game

Your weekly dose of Alluviance!
I get asked a version of the same question all the time:
The answer is simple, and a little uncomfortable.
They can't.
You can teach a sales methodology from a playbook. You can certify someone in a new script. You can roll out a new CRM with a training module.
But you cannot teach resilience from a slide deck. You cannot teach presence in a Zoom breakout room. You cannot teach someone how to be grounded when a deal is on the line if you, as the leader, are radiating anxiety about the forecast.
The Inner Game isn't a subject you learn. It's a path you walk.
A leader who hasn't done the work can talk about the concepts, but it reeks of inauthenticity. They can give their team a Headspace subscription, but they can't model what it looks like to take a breath instead of reacting when a client gets angry.
And this is the heart of the Alluviance mission.
This is why community is so important. Once you start this journey, you want to be surrounded by others getting their hands dirty. It's also why we started doing corporate engagements. Because sales professionals are hungry for this work, and their leadership needs help bringing it to life.
You have to be in the room. You have to be in the conversation. You have to feel what it's like to be in the presence of someone who has done the work, and let that experience recalibrate your own system.
So, why don't most sales orgs teach the Inner Game?
Because they just haven't done the work themselves. At least not yet... |
