Weekly Alluviance #71: "Beginner" Does Not Mean Easy
Your weekly dose of Alluviance!
An amazing yoga teacher dropped a bomb in one of her classes last week.
She mostly teaches advanced classes (not saying I'm an advanced yoga student) and leads workshops and retreats. She opened her class with…
“Beginner does not mean easy.”
A beginner yoga class can be quite difficult for a person new to yoga. Beginning in a new sales role can be quite difficult. Mastering a new element of the craft of sales can be full of challenges.
Beginner does not mean easy.
An advanced student might make a beginner class seem easy. A seasoned sales professional might make it seem easy to close a large enterprise deal. But sure enough, there was once a time when they were also beginners.
At Alluviance, we often talk about the beginning of the beginning. Read this previous newsletter if that phrase is new to you.
If you want to master the beginning, drop your judgements about how easy or hard it might be. There is going to be challenge.
Here’s the secret: keep it simple.
Beginner doesn’t mean easy. But is does invite you to keep it simple and focus on the basics. Simplicity is your best friend as a beginner. Tim Ferriss built his brand around accelerated learning through focusing on what’s really important. Your job as a beginner isn’t to try to mirror what the experts are doing. Your job is to focus on the fundamentals. Execute on the core elements. Learn. Improve. Repeat. Keep it simple.
Alluviance is on a mission to be the best in the world at throwing immersive experiences. When we first started, we kept it very simple. We still have a long ways to go to fulfill that mission, but we’re getting pretty damn good at the fundamentals.
If you want to be an excellent beginner, get really good at keeping it simple.
