Weekly Alluviance #80: Sales as the Throughline

Your weekly dose of Alluviance!

Alignment is a key concept when we talk about the inner game, but it's also critical in the path to sales mastery. I've been involved with many sales communities over the years, and a lot of people I speak with get that second part wrong. Let's dig in.

People often view sales as a stepping stone – a means to an end, a way to make a lot of money, or even an exit strategy. Sales is treated as some separate and temporary thing. That may be true for you, and there's nothing wrong with that, but here's the kicker...

Sales is not just a phase you go through; it's a fundamental part of who you are and what you do. It's the throughline that connects your vision and purpose with real-world action.

Think about it: sales isn't just about closing deals. It's about creating relationships, understanding needs, and providing value. It's about listening, empathizing, and solving problems. These are not just sales skills. They are life skills. They are the very essence of how we interact with the world and what it means to be a great leader. Mastering these skills in the world of sales sets you up to embody your vision in all that you do.

When you view sales as a throughline (and not separate from your vision), you can start to connect the dots. This is what we mean by alignment. It's all connected to a higher purpose. Sales becomes the foundation upon which you build your personal and professional journey. It's not something to gloss over or rush through. It's a core part of your journey. By doing so, you align your daily actions with your bigger goals and purpose, creating a cohesive and intentional path forward.

Sales as a throughline means recognizing that every interaction, every conversation, and every deal is an opportunity to step into vision.

So, let's try on this shift in perspective. A true sales professional knows that sales isn't a transient phase. It's the glue that aligns our vision and the bridge that connects short term and long term actions. This perspective unlocks the potential to live and work with alignment, achieving greater success and fulfillment in all areas of our lives.

This month, we'll be going deep with our new theme of aligning our vision. As a starting point, please ask yourself if you've embraced sales as a throughline connecting all that you do or as a separate element from your vision.

There's no new episode this week, so we're throwing it back to a classic! This episode with Chris was released back in March of this year, and what a difference a few months make. It's fun to look back on this episode and see the sparks of the beginning.

Find it on Spotify, Apple Podcast, and Youtube.

"Going off script"

For some of you this is going to sting a bit.

If you're still relying on a script, you clearly don’t understand real sales...
