Weekly Alluviance #64: Let's Ruffle Some Damn Feathers

YOUR WEEKLY DOSE OF ALLUVIANCE!

The fear of cancellation is real. Comedians, celebrities, politicians, and even colleagues and friends have admitted to self-censoring yet, paradoxically, our thirst for authenticity is at an all-time high.

Navigating this, especially in sales and sales leadership, requires an incredible amount of courage. Especially if we're being asked to speak our minds in a tense conversation, whether it’s calling someone out on a sales call, speaking up to our teams or executives, or sharing unpopular opinions, our first inclination might be to shrink.

There have been times when I've shared some spicy takes with you all in the past (like here, here, here, and most recently here), not all of which were met with agreement. But this is the essence of leadership - speaking one’s truth even when it risks backlash.

Authenticity, especially in leadership, isn’t about seeking controversy. It's about being true to our values and ourselves, even if it means upsetting the status quo.

If one of your highest values is authenticity, then you have to accept that you will piss some people off - just by being your true self.

I'm not telling you to go out and get cancelled (please don't), but I am inviting you to own your voice and your truth, especially when it doesn't sound like everyone else's. This is the leadership we are committed to cultivating in our community, and when people feel safe to do so, it opens up new worlds of connection and possibility.

Please, I encourage you, ruffle some feathers.
