Weekly Alluviance #84: Plotting Your Personal Development Course

Your weekly dose of Alluviance!

If you want to run a marathon, you don't start training by running as far as you can as fast as you can on day one, and then hope to get a little further and faster the next day. There are many ways to properly train for a marathon, and I can assure you that this isn't an effective one of them.

And yet, this is how I see some people approach their journey into personal development.

They dive headfirst into a flurry of activities: books, courses, podcasts, youtube and workshops. Hoping that somewhere in the chaos, growth will happen. But here’s the truth. Without a plan, without intention, without plotting your course, you’re just running without direction. And more often then not, you'll be running in the wrong direction.

Personal development isn’t about how fast you can grow, but how intentionally you can grow. Are you growing in the right areas that make sense for where you are at today. It’s about setting a course that is aligned with your vision, and then sticking to it with purpose and dedication. Just like training for that marathon, it’s not about the sprint -- it’s about the steady, consistent pace that brings results over time.

So, how do you plot your personal development course? I'll give you two paths: one that you can implement on your own and the other will help you save some time and headaches.

Option 1: The DIY Path

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Start with clear, achievable goals. Know what you want to achieve and why it matters. Vague goals like “I want to be better at sales” don’t give you a clear direction. Instead, get specific: “I want to improve my closing rate by 15% in the next six months.”

  2. Create a Plan: Break down your big goal into smaller, actionable steps. If your goal is to improve your closing rate, what are the specific skills or knowledge areas you need to focus on? Maybe it’s mastering objection handling, refining your pitch, or enhancing your follow-up strategy. Map out these steps and put them into a timeline.

  3. Be Intentional: It’s not just about doing more; it’s about doing what matters. Focus on the activities that align with your goals and move the needle. This means saying no to distractions and being disciplined about where you invest your time and energy.

  4. Find Your Community: No journey is meant to be taken alone. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals who are also committed to growth can make all the difference. A strong community provides motivation, accountability, and valuable insights that enrich your journey.

Option 2: Get help to speed up the process

Leverage the experience of those who’ve already walked this path. Join a curated community and work with experts who have helped others achieve their goals as a way to fast-track your personal development. At Alluviance, we do just that and provide the structure, accountability, and support you need to hit your goals faster and with fewer missteps. Instead of trial and error, you get proven strategies tailored to your needs. Ready to skip the guesswork and start seeing real results? Book some time on my calendar, and let’s accelerate your journey together.

Your personal development journey is yours to own, but that doesn’t mean you have to go it alone. Whether you choose the DIY route or decide to leverage expert guidance and a supportive community, the key is to take intentional, consistent action that aligns with your vision. This is not about quick fixes or shortcuts; it’s about finding the right path for you, setting clear goals, and committing to the process. If you’re ready to accelerate your growth and make the most out of your journey, let’s connect and explore how we can help you reach your full potential.

So, what’s your next step?

How are you going to plot your course for the next leg of your journey? Let’s commit to it together.
