Weekly Alluviance #95: Fueling Greatness: Motivating Your Team Through Purpose

Your weekly dose of Alluviance!

Only 12% of salespeople feel engaged in their work according to a recent study. Let that sink in. Nearly nine out of ten sales professionals are showing up every day disconnected, uninspired, and just going through the motions.

That’s not just a statistic. It’s a gut punch. Why? Because disengagement hits hard on so many levels:

  • It’s miserable. For those salespeople, work isn’t just uninspiring. It’s something they actively dread. Showing up every day feels like a grind, not a choice.

  • It’s a leadership problem. Disengagement doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It’s a reflection of a gap in leadership. And it's one that can absolutely be addressed.

  • I’ve been there. I know what it feels like to be that disengaged employee, feeling lost, and disconnected from purpose. And I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

This a call to action for leaders. Because disengagement is solvable, and the solution starts with us.

Let’s get real: true motivation doesn’t come from commissions, quotas, or Friday happy hours. Those things are nice, sure, but they’re temporary. The best sales leaders know that long-term motivation comes from tapping into something deeper: purpose.

So, how do you build a purpose-driven team that stays connected and engaged? It starts with these four foundational steps:

  1. Connect to your individual “why.”

If you’re not aligned with your own deeper purpose, your leadership will feel hollow. Lead authentically by knowing exactly what drives you and showing up with that clarity every day.

  1. Help your team connect to their individual “why.”

Everyone’s motivation is personal, and it’s your job to uncover it. Take the time to understand what truly matters to each team member and let them feel seen.

  1. Present the team “why” and get buy-in.

A strong team is built on a shared mission that everyone believes in. Clearly articulate that mission and invite your team to take ownership of it.

  1. Connect the dots between the individual and team “why.”

Show your team how their personal goals align with the larger mission. When people see how their contributions fit into the bigger picture, their work becomes meaningful.

From here, it’s about keeping that connection alive. Create regular reminders of the shared purpose, check in often, and celebrate progress along the way.

Purpose-driven teams don’t just perform better. They thrive. They build trust. They create connections. They deliver results that go beyond the numbers.

So, here’s the real question: Is your team part of the 12% showing up engaged for work? Are you?

If not, what are you doing today to change that? And I really do mean today! Perhaps, it's finally time you click this link and get some time on my calendar.

Life is too short to be disengaged in anything you do. Let's bring that level of purpose and connection to all that we do this week.
